Feed You Healthy is an experienced fresh fruit and vegetable consultant who loves shopping, cooking and tasting delicious food. I have been fortunate enough to dine at some amazing restaurants around the world and shop at many spectacular markets and food stores. I love to cook and entertain at home, but I don’t have any formal training—my knife skills are mediocre, but I do learn from master chefs here and there. Food is just a personal preference.
I was born in Yuen Long, Hong Kong, and grew up in Hong Kong. After years of hard work, I was admitted to university and then to the Graduate School of HKUST. For more than a decade, I worked in IT for companies and banks, first as a technology consultant, and in my younger years I traveled all over Africa, Asia, Australia, and sometimes even to China. Now running the Food for You Healthy online store, what annoys me the most is people who lack logic and rationality... but the second thing that annoys me is having to run to a dozen local stores, markets, grocery stores, etc. to find the ingredients our customers need.
The lack of selection, inventory and consistency in produce, meats and dry goods was frustrating, but we learned to adapt. Over the past few years, the food options we have available have increased dramatically, and I have begun to experiment with some lesser-known sources to contact my own suppliers. I learn something every week, and now I find myself learning and being exposed to something new almost every day, which I sincerely share with customers who ask for it.

In Hong Kong and Cantonese cuisine, South African abalone is extremely popular, especially live or fresh abalone, commonly found in restaurant fish tanks or wet market stalls. Compared to South African abalone, Shandong abalone has a milder flavor and absorbs flavors more easily. Common cooking methods include steaming with ginger and scallions, braising with oyster sauce, scallion oil abalone, or stir-frying sliced abalone. It is highly nutritious, rich in high-quality protein, taurine, zinc, and other minerals. Due to strict protection of wild resources, most products on the market are farmed. While considered high-end seafood in Hong Kong, it is relatively affordable and has consistently maintained high popularity.
Shandong abalone mainly refers to the wrinkled abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) farmed along the Yellow and Bohai Sea coasts of Shandong Province, China, and is one of the most famous abalone varieties in northern China. Shandong, as an important marine aquaculture base in China, possesses uniquely advantageous cold-water sea areas, resulting in high-quality abalone with tender flesh and a sweet taste.
Compared to wild South African or Australian abalone, Shandong abalone has a shorter growth cycle (generally 2-5 years), a moderate size, and a stable yield, making it more affordable and a popular high-end seafood ingredient in everyday home cooking and restaurants. Its flesh is tender, with a moderate flavor that easily absorbs taste, making it suitable for various cooking methods such as steaming, soups, braising, stir-frying, or hot pot. Dried Shandong abalone has a golden color and a rich aroma, making it a popular choice for gifts and banquets.
Shandong abalone is not only nutritious (rich in protein, taurine, and minerals), but also represents the characteristics of northern Chinese seafood—fresh without being fishy, tender without being dry—making it a top choice for gourmets seeking value for money and practicality.

The main differences between South African, Shandong, and Australian abalone (compared by common forms: fresh, dried, and canned):
1. Origin and Varieties
South African Abalone (Peacock Abalone / Perlemoen): Endemic to South Africa, Haliotis midae, mainly wild (some farmed), extremely slow-growing (8-10 years to mature). In Hong Kong, it is often called "bluefish/good quality" and is considered a top-grade abalone.
Shandong Abalone: Farmed in northern China, Haliotis discus hannai, from the Yellow and Bohai Seas (Changdao, Rongcheng, etc.). China is the world's largest abalone farming country, with Shandong representing the north.
Australian Abalone: The world's largest producer, mainly a mix of wild and farmed abalone. Common varieties include Greenlip, Blacklip, and Brownlip. Originating in Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, etc.
2. Growth Cycle, Size, and Yield
South African: Slowest growing, large in size, thick-fleshed, weighing several ounces (fresh abalone often weighs over 8 pieces per pound). Shandong: Fast-growing (2-5 years), smaller size, high yield.

South Africa: Best texture—thick, springy, delicate, with a soft, chewy "sweet center," and the most intense and sweet abalone flavor. Reputed as the king of fresh abalone, best steamed to highlight its original flavor.
Shandong: Tender/softer texture, milder flavor (requires seasoning), less intense umami than South African abalone, suitable for soups, stir-fries, and everyday cooking.

- Do note that weight range provided is before any descaling, de-gutting and cleaning of the fish. The whole fish will belong to you - inclusive of fish bone, fish head, and all the meat!
- Selecting fillet means that we will fillet and portion the fish, and pack them individually. The fish head will be cut in half. We will return you the big bones which can be use to make fish bone broth.
- Selecting steak cut means that we will chop the fish into appropriate size of steaks. The fish head will be cut in half.

Here are some general guidelines for choosing seafood:
Choose sustainable fishery products:
Prefer seafood that has been certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), which means that the seafood comes from sustainable fisheries.
Understand the source of seafood:
Try to choose local catches as they have a shorter transportation distance and a lower carbon footprint. Avoid overfished species such as certain large fish and deep-sea fish.
Pay attention to seasonality:
Some seafood has a spawning period, and fishing during the spawning period will affect its population, so try to avoid it. Check the seafood season and choose the right seasonal seafood.
Reduce the consumption of large fish:
