Heirloom Plant

These plants were common in early human history but are not used in modern large-scale agriculture

In some parts of the world, it is illegal to sell seeds of cultivars that are not on the list approved for sale.

Many traditional vegetables retain their identity through open pollination, while fruit varieties such as apples have been propagated for centuries through grafting and cuttings. The trend of growing heirloom plants is becoming popular again because of the traditional flavors of these fruits and vegetables.

In ancient China, except for the rich and powerful, no one else could eat the so-called "forbidden rice"

There are several varieties of black rice, including Indonesian black rice, Philippine heirloom Balatinaw black rice and Pirutong black glutinous rice, and Thai jasmine black rice.

Bhutanese Red Rice

The staple food of the people of Bhutan

Bhutanese red rice is a red japonica rice. It is semi-milled – some red bran remains on the rice. Therefore, it cooks slightly faster than unmilled brown rice. When cooked, the rice is light pink, soft and slightly sticky.

Besides being gluten-free, Bhutanese red rice is also rich in protein, potassium, manganese, selenium, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and B vitamins. It is known to contain higher levels of iron and zinc than white, black or brown rice.
