Indian flatbread is an indispensable staple food in Indian cuisine, generally referring to various flatbreads made primarily from wheat flour (whole wheat flour or refined flour). There are many types of Indian flatbread, broadly categorized into two main types: unleavened (such as Roti or Chapati) and fermented (such as Naan).

The most common type, Roti/Chapati, is an unleavened flatbread, made by kneading whole wheat flour, water, and a little salt into a dough, rolling it out thinly, and then baking it on a flat iron plate (tawa). It has a soft, chewy texture and a wheaty aroma, and is often torn by hand and eaten with curry, lentil soup (dal), or vegetables. It is a basic daily staple in Indian households, healthy and easily digestible.

Other types include: Baratha: thicker, multi-layered and crispy, often spread with ghee or filled with fillings such as potatoes and onions, and fried until golden brown. Naan: fermented and baked at high temperatures in a tandoor oven, fluffy and soft, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, often brushed with butter or garlic.
