Zhaotong Ugly Apple (also known as Yunnan Plateau Apple or Zhaotong Sugar-Heart Apple) is a specialty from Zhaotong City in northeastern Yunnan Province, China. It is famous for its imperfect appearance paired with exceptional sweetness, crispness, and rich aroma. The nickname “ugly apple” (丑蘋果) comes from its natural, unbagged growth style—resulting in irregular shapes, rough skin with fruit rust (果鏽), and uneven coloring—while delivering superior flavor often described as “丑到沒朋友,甜到沒對手” (too ugly to have friends, too sweet to have rivals).
It thrives at high altitudes (typically 1,800–2,400 m, some areas above 2,300 m) on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, benefiting from low latitude, strong sunlight, large diurnal temperature differences (often 12–15°C), and clean air. This environment promotes high sugar accumulation and the formation of translucent “ice sugar hearts” (冰糖心/糖心) around the core in mid-to-late season fruit.
Main varieties include adapted Red Fuji types (e.g., strip-red or plate-red Fuji, 2001) and Golden Delicious (金帥/黃元帥) variants. Zhaotong apples hold National Geographical Indication protection (registered 2010). The industry is significant: recent data show roughly 80–100 million mu planting area scale in the region, with high output and strong e-commerce and export presence (including Southeast Asia). In 2024, selected Zhaotong apples even flew with the Shenzhou-18 mission.
Key characteristics: Early ripening (often 20–30 days earlier than major northern Chinese regions), high soluble solids (≥15% official standard; premium fruit commonly 15–17+°Brix), crisp texture, juicy, fragrant, and balanced sweet-tart profile.
Approximate values per 100 g fresh fruit (varies by variety, season, and specific batch; based on regional data and official standards):
Apples in general support digestive health (fiber/pectin), provide antioxidants, and contribute potassium. Exact nutrient profiles should be verified with lab testing for commercial labeling.
