Ganoderma are characterized by basidiocarps that are large, perennial, woody brackets also called "conks". They are lignicolous and leathery either with or without a stem. The fruit bodies typically grow in a fan-like or hoof-like form on the trunks of living or dead trees. They have double-walled, truncate spores with yellow to brown ornamented inner layers.

The natural wild "Compendium of Materia Medica" written by Li Shizhen in the Ming Dynasty records that Ganoderma lucidum is a "superior medicine". The types of Ganoderma lucidum included are green Ganoderma lucidum, red Ganoderma lucidum, yellow Ganoderma lucidum, white Ganoderma lucidum, black Ganoderma lucidum and purple Ganoderma lucidum, which are also six types. Each type is listed with explanation of name, collection of explanations, correctness, treatment, smell, main treatment and additional prescriptions. According to the theory of the Five Elements, white Ganoderma belongs to gold, green Ganoderma belongs to wood, black Ganoderma belongs to water, red and purple Ganoderma belong to fire, and yellow Ganoderma belongs to earth. Ganoderma lucidum tastes sweet and slightly bitter, and has a mild medicinal property. Its main function is to tonify the middle and replenish Qi, nourish the heart and calm the mind. It is used for weakness, loss of appetite, improvement of kidney deficiency, improvement of fatigue, enhancement of male function, protection of the liver and kidneys, diuresis, palpitations, insomnia, forgetfulness, as well as coughing, sputum and wheezing, and long-term cough. It is now also used to promote the health of the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems, and to improve neurasthenia, chronic respiratory problems, etc.

明代の李時珍が著した天然野生の『本草綱目』には、霊芝は「優れた薬」であると記録されています。収録されている霊芝の種類は、緑霊芝、赤霊芝、黄霊芝、白霊芝、黒霊芝、紫霊芝の6種類で、それぞれの名前の説明、説法集、正誤、治療法、匂い、主な治療法、追加の処方が記載されています。五行説によれば、白い霊芝は金に属し、緑の霊芝は木に属し、黒い霊芝は水に属し、赤と紫の霊芝は火に属し、黄色の霊芝は土に属します。霊芝は甘くて少し苦く、薬効は穏やかです。主な効能は、中枢を補って気を補い、心臓を滋養し、精神を落ち着かせることです。虚弱、食欲不振、腎虚の改善、疲労改善、男性機能の増強、肝腎の保護、利尿、動悸、不眠、物忘れ、咳嗽、痰、喘鳴、長期咳嗽などに使用されます。現在では、心臓血管系や脳血管系の健康を促進し、神経衰弱や慢性呼吸器疾患などを改善するためにも使用されています。
