The FMO Fishery Products Processing Centre promotes local high-quality fishery products through the establishment of the FMO's brand new "Local Premium Fresh" brand. The FMO and the AFCD have cooperated to promote the local "Quality Fish Farm Project", and through the Fishery Products Processing Centre, the fishery products of the project, including: aconite, mussel and gem fish, etc., among which gem fish are fishery protection The high-quality GemFish introduced by the Department from Australia has been on the market since 2006, and greatly supported.
In order to cooperate with the "Blueprint for Sustainable Development of Fisheries and Agriculture", a new unified brand of local fishery and agricultural products was launched in mid-2026, in conjunction with certification, testing and traceability mechanisms, aiming to enhance product awareness and provide citizens with safe, high-quality and carbon-reducing choices, thereby improving the market competitiveness of the products and increasing the income of fishermen and farmers.

English Name: Flathead Grey Mullet, Grey Mullet
Body is round and elongated, with a slightly flattened head and a slightly laterally compressed tail. Dark longitudinal stripes are often present on the sides of the body. Highly adaptable, it can live in brackish water or freshwater environments. The best quality Yuen Long mullet is characterized by a bloated belly, smooth scales, bright eyes, and a weight of approximately 1 pound. A bloated belly indicates abundant larvae.
Origin and Farming Characteristics: The fishpond soil in Yuen Long (especially Nam Sang Wai, San Tin, and Mai Po areas) is naturally saline, and the water is slightly brackish, making it ideal for mullet originally living in river estuaries. Since the 1960s, local fishermen have gradually desalinated wild saltwater mullet fry before releasing them into fishponds, successfully developing the "Yuen Long mullet" as a unique Hong Kong aquatic product. They can reach about 1 pound in weight and be marketable after about 9 months to 1.5 years of farming. Some premium fish farms feed their fish with peanut bran before harvest to promote the accumulation of fish oil; others use low-salinity water to inhibit the growth of freshwater algae, effectively reducing the muddy taste. Currently, most are products of the "Premium Fish Farm" program, and there are also eco-friendly farmed versions.
Flesh Texture and Flavor: The flesh is firm yet tender, rich in fish oil (especially the rich, buttery flavor from the belly), with a prominent umami taste. Compared to purely freshwater farmed mullet, the Yuen Long version has less muddy taste and a cleaner texture; compared to saltwater mullet, it is more plump and oily. It is at its fattest and most delicious in autumn and winter.
Nutritional Characteristics: High in high-quality protein, rich in healthy fats (including unsaturated fatty acids), and moderate in calories, making it a common and affordable source of high-quality protein for everyday families.
Cooking Suggestions:
Classic: Steamed with salted lemon (or steamed with golden and silver lemons) – best brings out the sweetness and appetizing flavor, ready in about 10 minutes.
Others: Steamed with black bean sauce, salt-baked, steamed, frozen mullet (Teochew style), or made into dried fish.
The belly and buttery parts are particularly sweet and flavorful, suitable for all ages.
Selection and Storage: Prioritize fresh fish with bright eyes, a glossy body, a plump belly, and weighing approximately 1 pound.
