Shrimp seedlings are mainly produced in artificial hatcheries from wild-caught seed shrimp.


It is an important edible species. It is widely cultivated in its distribution area, mainly in Southeast Asia. It is an important species, accounting for about 40% of Japan's shrimp imports. The main import sources are Indonesia, India and Vietnam. It is a large member of the shrimp family and grows rapidly. They are darker when raw but turn to a uniform pale pink when heated. In Japan, it is used in various dishes such as fried shrimp, tempura, and salt boiling.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has developed these guidelines to create a new trend in diet and make caring for the ocean a consumer responsibility.

The guidelines cover more than 70 types of seafood commonly found in local markets, supermarkets, refrigerated food stores and restaurants, and divide them into three categories: "Green - First Choice", "Yellow - Second Choice" and "Red - Avoid" , so that consumers can make the right choice. In accordance with the guidelines jointly developed by the association and other non-governmental organizations, marine scientists strictly evaluate the seafood species in the guidelines, whether they are wild-caught or artificially cultured.

In 2010, Greenpeace added Penaeus monodon to its seafood red list. The reason is that the cultivation of Penaeus monodon has destroyed mangrove forests in several countries and has tended to lead to overfishing.

ecological impact
Shrimp ponds undergo frequent water exchanges, and sewage is discharged into open waters. Long-term mangrove restoration efforts are still unable to fully compensate for the damage that shrimp farm expansion continues to cause to mangrove habitats. There is a high risk of tiger prawns escaping during water changes, harvests, and flooding, but they are native to Vietnam, so the potential environmental impact is minimal. Disease is one of the common problems in shrimp farming and is controlled using small amounts of chemicals.

Vietnam has developed a unique initiative to increase black tiger shrimp production in mangrove forests without the use of any feed, chemicals or antibiotics. This creates a shrimp product with a sweeter style, more complex flavor, firmer texture and brighter color. It also helps combat economic pressure to destroy mangroves and ensure the protection of Vietnam’s indigenous communities.
