🛍 Product Information :
Turmeric (commonly known as 薑黃 in Hong Kong, Guangdong, and Taiwan), scientifically named Curcuma longa, is the rhizome of a perennial herbaceous plant in the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family. Native to South Asia (India and Southeast Asia), it is now widely cultivated in southern China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and tropical regions worldwide.
The plant resembles ginger with large leaves; the edible rhizome is fleshy, finger-like or knobby, revealing a vibrant orange-yellow color when cut, with a warm, earthy, slightly pungent aroma due to curcumin and volatile oils.
It is valued for invigorating blood to resolve stasis, promoting qi movement to relieve pain, breaking up blood stasis, and aiding digestion. It has been traditionally used for blood stasis and qi stagnation conditions such as chest/abdominal pain, hypochondriac pain, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, rheumatic pain, traumatic injuries, and poor digestion.
In Hong Kong and Cantonese cuisine, turmeric is used as a spice for color and flavor in curries, braised dishes, or stir-fries. It is also popular in golden milk, teas, or as a supplement. Modern interest focuses on curcumin’s potential benefits for inflammation, cardiovascular health, and more.
🥘 Recipe:
Practical Recipe Tips for Turmeric Curry. Turmeric brings a vibrant golden color, a mild aroma, and antioxidant benefits. Combined with curry powder, it creates a rich and layered flavor, perfect for Hong Kong-style home cooking (Hong Kong-style or Chinese curry chicken). It has a mild, non-spicy taste and goes well with rice or bread.
Important Tips
Turmeric Amount: Beginners are advised to use 1–2 teaspoons of powder (or a small piece of fresh turmeric root grated). Too much will result in a slightly bitter taste.
Enhancing Absorption: Adding black pepper (or a little white pepper) and oil can help the curcumin be absorbed better.
Adjusting Spiciness: Add red chili peppers or curry powder to adjust the spiciness.
Suitable Pairings: Chicken, beef, vegetables, or seafood. For a richer flavor, add coconut milk; for a lighter flavor, add water or broth.
1. Classic Recipe: Hong Kong Style Turmeric Curry Chicken (Simple One-Pot Recipe, Perfect for Everyday Use)
Ingredients (Serves 3-4):
Chicken thighs or wings 500-600g (cut into chunks, bone-in is more flavorful)
2-3 potatoes (cut into chunks)
1 carrot (cut into chunks, optional)
1-2 onions (cut into chunks)
4-6 cloves garlic (minced or smashed)
1-1.5 teaspoons turmeric powder (or a suitable amount of fresh turmeric)
2-3 tablespoons curry powder (adjust according to brand)
200-250ml coconut milk (or fresh milk/water)
300-400ml water or chicken broth
2-3 tablespoons oil, salt/sugar to taste, a pinch of black pepper, 1 tablespoon Shaoxing wine (optional to remove fishy smell)
Instructions:
Marinate the chicken with a little soy sauce, sugar, and cornstarch for 10-15 minutes (optional). Heat oil in a pan and sauté minced garlic and onion until golden brown.
Add chicken and stir-fry until lightly golden brown. Sprinkle with turmeric powder and curry powder and stir-fry for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, being careful not to burn it.
Add potatoes and carrots and stir-fry briefly. Add water/broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
Pour in coconut milk and cook for 5 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt/sugar. Finally, sprinkle with black pepper.
Thicken the sauce slightly if desired.
This dish is golden and enticing, with a rich aroma, reminiscent of Hong Kong-style cafes. It's perfect with white rice.
2. Refreshing Version: Turmeric Vegetable Curry (Vegan/Weight-Loss Friendly)
Ingredients:
Vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, red and yellow bell peppers, eggplant, carrots, etc. (as needed)
Onion, garlic, 1 teaspoon turmeric powder, 2 tablespoons curry powder
Coconut milk or plant-based milk 200ml, water as needed, salt/sugar as needed
Instructions:
Sauté onion and garlic in a hot pan until fragrant.
Add firm vegetables (such as carrots and eggplant) and sauté first, then add softer vegetables.
Sprinkle in turmeric powder and curry powder and sauté until fragrant.
Add water and simmer until the vegetables are tender. Finally, add coconut milk and bring to a boil to season.
Quick, healthy, and vibrant in color, perfect for summer.
3. Other Variations
- Turmeric Curry Chicken Wings: Use chicken wings instead of chicken legs. For a Thai flavor, add more lemongrass or galangal. Increase the proportion of coconut milk for a richer flavor.
- Turmeric Pumpkin Chicken: Add chestnut pumpkin or regular pumpkin for a sweeter flavor, perfect for autumn and winter.
- Tomato Turmeric Curry: Add tomatoes or tomato sauce for a sweet and sour, appetizing flavor and a brighter red color.
- Stir-fried Turmeric Curry: Add less water and stir-fry chicken or shrimp quickly over high heat; suitable for bento boxes.
- Dessert Variation: Cook a small amount of turmeric powder with coconut milk and sugar to make turmeric milk (Golden Milk), warming and soothing for the stomach and promotes sleep.
🔅Notes:
Precaution: Its warming nature makes it unsuitable in large amounts for those with yin deficiency, internal heat, bleeding disorders, or gallbladder issues. Pregnant women should use cautiously (may affect the uterus in high doses). It may cause stomach discomfort if taken on an empty stomach or in excess. Absorption of curcumin improves when combined with black pepper or fats. Choose fresh rhizomes or high-quality powder without mold.
