Lamiaceae
Scientific Name: Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender'
English Name: Mona Lavender Spur Flower, Plectranthus 'Mona Lavender', Plectranthus 'Plepalila'
日名:プレクトランサス ‘モナ・ラベンダー’
Other Names: Purple Phoenix
Introduction
Plectranthus spur is a perennial herb and horticultural hybrid. It grows 30-75 cm tall. Its stem is square, often branching from below. It has opposite, ovate leaves, 2-5 cm long and 1-3 cm wide. The leaves are dark green or purple above, purple below, and have serrated margins. Verticillasters of light purple flowers emerge from the branches. The upper lip is wide and spreading, while the lower lip is small and closed, with dark purple spots. The flowers are approximately 0.7 cm in diameter and bloom year-round.
Cultivation
Suitable for warm, part-sun conditions, with some shade tolerance. Avoid direct sunlight in midsummer. Use loam or potting soil rich in organic matter. Not drought-tolerant; water when the medium is slightly dry. Flowering is stimulated by short days, with normal flowering occurring from autumn to spring. A small amount of flowering can continue even when planted outdoors in the shade. Apply a comprehensive, long-lasting fertilizer once per season. Prune branches after peak flowering to control plant height and encourage branching for further flowering. Propagate by cuttings.
Applications
A vigorous plant with beautiful flowers and foliage. Its dense, clump-forming growth makes it suitable for colorful lines in flower beds or blocks of color in large patches. It also works well in flower beds, pots, and in landscape arrangements, complementing other flower arrangements.
Information
This variety was developed by horticulturist Roger Jaques of the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in South Africa and has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Note:
As for the potted plants of ornamental flowers and edible flowers, most of them need the cooperation of temperature, sunlight and fertilizer. Most places in the city are not suitable for planting, unless there are rooftops and village houses with open sun. Not every family is suitable for planting. If you want to increase the survival rate, you can consider violets and orchids as ornamental flowers that are slightly suitable for urban planting.
