The Packaging Fee (also known as "Packaging and Processing Fee") is an additional charge commonly imposed by restaurants in Hong Kong for takeaway and take-out orders. It covers the costs of takeaway containers, plastic bags, individual sauce packets, disposable cutlery, tapes, and the extra labor and time required for packing.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, this fee has become a standard practice in Hong Kong’s takeaway culture, typically ranging from HK$3 to HK$10 depending on the restaurant type and packaging complexity. Some chain restaurants have now absorbed this cost into menu prices and no longer list it separately, whereas most small to medium-sized cha chaan tengs and roasted meat shops still itemize it clearly on the bill.
