Producer
Mouneyrac Frères began in 1928 on a farm in Corrèze. The second generation specialised in apples and pears in the 1960s; a stand at Rungis Market followed in 1969. Today Serge and Jean-Louis Mouneyrac lead a network of trusted growers focused on flavour-first fruit for professionals and export.
The variety
Renoir was bred by Italy’s CIV programme (cross FG-88 × B9-5), selected in 2004 and later plant-patented. Breeders aimed for Reinette-like aroma, higher sugar, scab resistance and reliable cropping. The rustic russeted look and painterly name sit naturally with Mouneyrac’s heritage-style range (Golden Rose, Gold Rush, Reine des Reinettes, Chantecler, etc.).
Look and taste
Shape is conical-obloid and slightly flattened. Ground colour is yellowish-green with russet over most of the surface; sun-exposed fruit may show a light red flush. Flesh is yellow, firm and juicy. Flavour is intense and aromatic—close to Canada White Reinette, but sweeter and more immediately approachable. Good to eat the day it is picked.
Growing and keeping
Moderately vigorous, open habit, short branches; self-thinning (typically one or two fruit per cluster). Resistant to apple scab. Stores well into spring under cool conditions.
How to use
Best eaten fresh at room temperature. Also works in salads, cheese boards, tarts, baked apples and sauces; the firm flesh holds shape better than many dessert apples. Store cool and dry; refrigerate for longer keeping and bring back to room temperature before serving.
