Glutinous rice balls are a popular dessert in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. Nuomici (glutinous rice balls) are similar to Japanese mochi, and are even essentially the same. The recipes may vary slightly from place to place, leading to different names. Both glutinous rice balls and mochi are primarily made from glutinous rice flour. Fillings such as red bean paste, lotus seed paste, or peanuts are commonly added, but more exotic fillings such as cheese, sesame, matcha, strawberry, mango, and durian can also be found. However, some are made without any filling at all. The dough is made by mixing glutinous rice flour and sugar (sometimes with coconut milk), then fillings are added, and steamed. After cooling, the dough can be coated with shredded coconut or tapioca starch.

Nuomici, also known as Zhuangyuanci (a type of rice cake), is a popular snack in Southern China and Hong Kong. Made primarily from glutinous rice, glutinous rice balls are popular for eating, entertaining guests, and as gifts for friends and family.
