🌱 Supplier introduction:

The Vegetable Marketing Office (VMO) was established in 1946, and the position of director is filled by public officials nominated by the government. Responsible for the development and benefit of farmers. Since the establishment of the vegetable wholesale market, the vegetable transportation and sales business has also begun. In vegetable growing areas in the New Territories, there are 5 vegetable collection stations and multiple designated collection locations to collect, weigh vegetables and process related documents. Later, as cooperative undertakings gradually developed, vegetable production and marketing cooperatives were established. Take over most of the collection stations and undertake the above-mentioned transportation and sales business. Currently, a total of 26 vegetable production and marketing cooperatives have been established. This department still has a collection station to continue its service to facilitate some farmers who do not sell through cooperatives to transport their products to the market for sale.
🛍 Product Information :
Chinese yam (淮山 / 山藥) has been cultivated in China for over 2,000 years, with premium types historically associated with the Huai River region (hence “淮山”). The mini/BB size refers to smaller, more uniform tubers—easier to handle, quicker to cook, and often more tender than large traditional yams. Flesh is white to creamy, with a fine, slightly sticky texture when cut (due to natural mucilage). Skin is thin and usually light brown with occasional natural markings. The plant is a climbing vine; the edible part is the underground tuber.
外觀與風味 | Appearance & Flavour
- Size: compact mini tubers, convenient for portion control.
- Colour: creamy white interior; pale skin.
- Texture: smooth and moist when raw; soft, slightly sticky, and tender when cooked.
- Flavour: mild, subtly sweet, neutral—does not overpower other ingredients.
The characteristic mucilage (黏液) is a hallmark of quality Chinese yam and contributes to its soothing mouthfeel.
營養價值 | Nutrition (approx. per 100 g fresh)
- Calories: ~57–118 kcal (varies with moisture)
- Carbohydrates: mainly starch (including resistant starch)
- Protein: ~1.5–2 g
- Fibre: notable soluble fibre and mucilaginous polysaccharides
- Key compounds: allantoin, dioscorin (storage protein), polysaccharides, minerals (potassium, etc.)
Resistant starch and mucilage act as prebiotics, supporting gut health. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is considered neutral in nature, sweet in flavour, and enters the Spleen, Lung, and Kidney meridians—used to strengthen the spleen, nourish yin, and support overall vitality.
食用方法 | Culinary Uses
-
Soups & stews: Classic addition to Cantonese soups (e.g., with chicken, pork, or goji) for natural thickness and mild sweetness.
-
Steamed or boiled: Simple preparation preserves texture and nutrition.
-
Pureed: Excellent for baby food (BB) or smoothies—mild flavour and easy digestion.
-
Stir-fry or pan-fry: Sliced and quickly cooked.
-
Other: Grated raw in some Japanese-style preparations, or used in congee.
Mini size cooks faster and is easier to peel and portion, making it practical for busy households.
儲存 | Storage
Store unpeeled in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place (not the refrigerator for long periods, as cold can damage texture). Once cut, wrap and refrigerate and use within 1–2 days. To reduce stickiness when peeling, wear gloves or briefly soak the peeled pieces in water with a little vinegar or salt.
適合人群與注意事項 | Suitability
Gentle and widely tolerated, suitable for all ages including infants (as an early solid food), the elderly, and those with weak digestion. As a starchy food, enjoy in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Always wash thoroughly and peel before use.

🔅Notes:
accredited farm ≠ organic farm; This is NOT ORGANIC. 🔆🔆 note that farmers are encouraged to use pesticides correctly and safely as well as farming with excellent, environmentally friendly methods.
The "Accredited Farm Program" ensures the high quality and safety of vegetables:
✅ Randomly test soil, irrigation water, and vegetable samples
✅ Regular farm visits
✅ Promote excellent horticulture practices
Accredited vegetables are vegetables produced under the Accredited Farm program. In 1994 the Department of Fisheries, Agriculture and Nature Conservation (AFCD) and the Department of Vegetable Organisation (VMO) jointly implemented the Accredited Farm Program to encourage farmers to use pesticides correctly and safely and to farm with excellent, environmentally friendly methods.
One method of testing is that the farmer will not use pesticides for a period of time before the expected harvest of vegetables, which is the vegetable safe harvest period, following safety standards and reducing pesticide residues. Of course, we must rinse the vegetables thoroughly with clean water before eating, so you can eat more safely and assuredly!
