"Local Banana" refers to banana varieties grown locally in Hong Kong, mainly in the New Territories. Although Hong Kong's agriculture is small-scale, some traditional local bananas are still cultivated, including "Dai Ziu" (big/plantain-type bananas), "Milk Banana" (or grey banana), and smaller amounts of sweeter dessert bananas. These local bananas are typically tree-ripened without artificial ripening agents, resulting in richer, more intense flavor and firmer texture. Dai Ziu bananas are larger, thicker-skinned, mildly sweet-sour, often cooked in soups or stir-fries for their cooling properties and digestive benefits (helping with constipation). Milk bananas are smaller, sweeter, and great for eating raw, especially popular with children. Compared to the dominant imported Cavendish bananas, local varieties are rarer and cherished, commonly found at organic farms, farmers' markets, or stores supporting local produce.
