Nutritional value: Roselle is a plant of the Malvaceae family, which is diuretic, pungent and flat, and enters the kidney meridian.

Modern research has found that Roselle has a variety of nutritional values, including vitamins A and C, protein, fat, malic acid, iron, and sodium. Nutritional analysis suggests that Roselle contains protocatechuic acid (PCA), and the extract can increase glutathione (Glutathione, GSH).

Protocatechin is a simple phenolic compound. Some research reports indicate that it has strong antioxidant capacity and can reduce bad cholesterol. However, protocatechuic acid is not unique to Roselle, and most vegetables, fruits and walnuts also contain a lot. The main physiological function of glutathione is an important antioxidant in the human body, which can scavenge free radicals and clean up the polluted environment in the human body. It is also produced by the human liver (some people think it has a whitening and spot-lightening function, which is one of the components of the whitening needle). Because the extract of Roselle contains glutathione, it is often said to be whitening. (The whitening effect of glutathione can refer to the introduction of some beauty products in the shop).

Phytochemicals

The Hibiscus leaves are a good source of polyphenolic compounds. The major identified compounds include neochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid, cryptochlorogenic acid, caffeoylshikimic acid and flavonoid compounds such as quercetin, kaempferol and their derivatives.[30] The flowers are rich in anthocyanins, as well as protocatechuic acid. The dried calyces contain the flavonoids gossypetin, hibiscetine and sabdaretine. The major pigment is not daphniphylline.[31] Small amounts of myrtillin (delphinidin 3-monoglucoside), chrysanthenin (cyanidin 3-monoglucoside), and delphinidin are present. Roselle seeds are a good source of lipid-soluble antioxidants, particularly gamma-tocopherol.[32]


Cooking method:
Take two flowers and drink a teaspoon of juice with boiling water. After drinking, you can eat the flowers again. It is very okay. Children like it. The jam can also be drunk with boiling water, just like Ribena. For making Luoshen flower tea, one or two dried calyxes are usually enough. The first one can be poured with hot water to remove impurities and dirt. After filtering the tea dregs, you can add rock sugar to taste, preferably with a cup lid. After a few minutes, the tea tastes strong. If you don't like to drink hot tea, adjust the flavor and let it cool before putting it in the freezer. Roselle tea should be drunk after meals to help digestion. The brewed tea soup is bright and red in color, with a slightly sour entrance and smooth throat. If it is sour and slightly sweet, it is the top grade of Roselle tea.

Special matters: 

Rosellle is acidic and cool. TCM reminds: Don't eat too much for stomachaches. Pregnant women with kidney disease should take it with caution. Roselle has an acidic and cool taste, so it is not suitable to eat large amounts. It is recommended not to consume more than 20 grams of Roselle per day (regardless of brewing or eating). Rosellle Flower Tea should not be drunk on an empty stomach, and should be drunk after a full stomach (Ming Pao/Registered TCM physician Ms Ip Lai Pan).
