Qingyuan chicken has a breeding history of thousands of years and is a valuable local agricultural variety resource in Qingyuan. "Qingyuan Chicken", commonly known as Qingyuan Ma Chicken, is one of the 27 high-quality breeds listed in the "Chinese Poultry Breeds Directory". It is named after the countless sesame-like spots on the back feathers of the hen. In June 2010, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine approved "Qingyuan Chicken" to obtain geographical indication product protection.

Qingyuan chicken has been famous since ancient times for its tender and smooth meat due to its region and breeding methods. It is famous for its golden skin, tender and smooth meat, crisp skin, soft bones, bright red and delicious meat, and unique flavor, and is deeply loved by diners. Qingping Chicken, one of Guangzhou’s famous dishes created in 1964 and known as “Guangzhou’s No. 1 Chicken”, is made from Qingyuan Chicken.

Yuanma chickens have a low production volume and a long breeding period. They have moderate muscle fat deposition, delicious meat, and a strong chicken flavor, which makes people feel sweet in the throat after eating.
