【Anti-cancer mechanism】
Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have discovered that a substance in shark cartilage can delay the growth of new blood vessels in solid tumors, thereby depriving the tumor of blood culture and inhibiting the growth rate. They conducted a large number of experiments on animals, first implanting cancer cells into the animals, and then injecting shark cartilage extract into their bodies. The results showed that the growth of the tumor gradually stopped because shark cartilage inhibited the growth of new blood vessels in the tumor. American scientists extracted a substance called coenzyme Q10 from shark livers and used it in clinical experiments to treat some elderly cancer patients, which alleviated or significantly improved their conditions. Through experiments, people have preliminarily learned the reasons why sharks do not get cancer: first, they contain some less complex compounds, such as high concentrations of lipids and rich vitamin A, which have anti-cancer activity; second, their immune system is different from that of humans. This immune system can non-specifically deal with various potentially harmful substances; third, they can secrete an enzyme that can decompose cancer cells, and this enzyme has been lost during human evolution.
