What is Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)?

Bt is a bacterium that occurs naturally in soils around the world. To reproduce, the spores produced by Bt grow into new bacteria. Bt spores contain proteins that are toxic to insect larvae. Since Bt comes from natural sources, it is called a biopesticide. In general, biopesticides tend to be less risky than typical man-made pesticides.

There are many types of Bt. Each type or strain affects a different group of insects. Target insects include Beetles, Flies (including mosquitoes), and Butterflies. It is used to kill the larvae of beetles and mosquitoes, black flies and moths. Bt is also toxic to nematodes.

Bt has been registered by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) as a pesticide since 1961. The U.S. EPA requires routine testing to ensure the absence of unwanted toxins and bacteria. Some of these unwanted toxins can be harmful to non-target animals and people.
