1. When to plant Swiss chard

Swiss chard is usually grown as a cool-season crop because it grows best in the cool temperatures of spring and autumn. However, chard can actually tolerate higher temperatures. Its growth slows down in summer, but the higher heat resistance of beet makes it an excellent salad vegetable, which can grow when it is too hot for others.

Plant beet seeds 2-3 weeks before the last spring frost date. In order to prolong the harvest, one beet seed is sown every 10 days for a month.

For the autumn harvest, plant chard seeds about 40 days before the first frost date.

2, how to grow Swiss chard

Mix compost before planting to ensure good drainage and fertile soil. If your soil is particularly poor, apply balanced fertilizer at the planting site

Sow seeds one-half to 1 inch deep, with continuous intervals of 2 to 4 inches.

Lines about 18 inches apart.

Second, growth

1. How to take care of the growth of Swiss chard

Once the plants are 3 to 4 inches tall, sparse them so that they are 6 to 8 inches apart (or 9 to 12 inches if larger plants are needed).

Normally, chard will do without fertilizer, but if your fertilizer looks small, consider applying a balanced fertilizer halfway through the season.

Water the Swiss chard evenly and consistently to help it grow better. Water is often watered during droughts in summer. You can also cover plants to help preserve moisture.

For best quality, cut the plant back when it is about 1 foot tall. If chard plants are overgrown, they will lose their flavor.

How to harvest Swiss chard

When your plant is 6 to 8 inches tall, you can start harvesting, depending on the desired leaf size. Use a sharp knife to cut the outer leaves one to one-half inch above the ground.
