Chicken Bone Grass (scientific name: Abrus pulchellus subsp. cantoniensis, also known as Canton Love-pea Vine or Prayer-beads) is a perennial climbing vine in the Fabaceae (legume) family. It is native to southern China, particularly Guangdong and Guangxi provinces, and grows in hilly areas, thickets, or along streams. The medicinal part is the dried whole plant (seeds must be removed as they are toxic).
Properties: Sweet and slightly bitter in taste, cool in nature; enters the Liver and Stomach meridians.
Functions: Clears heat and promotes diuresis (dampness), soothes the liver and relieves pain, detoxifies, and strengthens the spleen and stomach.
Indications: Damp-heat jaundice, hypochondriac discomfort, epigastric distension and pain, acute/chronic hepatitis, mastitis, rheumatic pain, bruises, etc. Pharmacological studies suggest anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and immune-boosting effects. It is commonly used in Lingnan (southern Chinese) herbal teas and soups.
Caution: Not suitable for those with spleen-stomach deficiency and cold patterns.
