五星花 (Pentas Lanceolata)
Pentas lanceolata, commonly known as Egyptian starcluster or star flower, is an evergreen shrub or herbaceous plant in the Rubiaceae family, native to tropical Africa. Growing to about 30-60 cm tall, it features opposite, elliptical leaves and star-shaped flowers (about 1 cm in diameter) in vibrant colors like red, pink, white, or blue-violet, with a long blooming period exceeding 6 months. Symbolizing "hope," it is widely used as an ornamental plant in butterfly gardens or containers, thriving in full sun and warm conditions, making it a popular choice for tropical landscaping.
Pentas lanceolata Cultivation Guide
Pentas lanceolata, also known as Egyptian starcluster or star flower, is a tropical African native with a long blooming period (summer to fall) in vibrant colors (red, pink, white, purple). It's easy to grow for beginners, ideal for pots or gardens, thriving in warm, sunny, drought-tolerant conditions.
Propagation & Planting
Propagation Methods:
Seeds: Best in spring (March-April). Sow evenly on a mix of river sand, perlite, and garden soil (1:1:1), cover lightly, keep moist at 20-25°C; germinates in 7-14 days. Transplant to pots after 7-9 weeks.
Cuttings: In summer, take 5-8cm tip cuttings, root in sand/perlite in semi-shade; roots in 2-3 weeks.
Potting: Use 10-15cm diameter pots (1 plant per 10cm, 1-2 per 15cm). Medium: Sterile peat soil (pH 6.5-6.8), well-draining; add pebbles at base. Fertilize lightly before transplanting.
Growing Conditions
Light: Full sun, at least 4-6 hours daily. Shade 50% in summer midday; more sun in winter for overwintering. Insufficient light causes leggy growth and few flowers.
Temperature: Optimal 15-25°C; day 22-24°C, night 17-18°C. Heat-tolerant but frost-sensitive; indoor >10°C in winter (below 5°C risks damage, no blooms). Ventilate in summer >28°C.
Soil: Fertile, loose, well-draining. Mix garden soil + sand + leaf mold + base fertilizer (3:2:2:1); avoid alkaline (pH<6.0 causes iron toxicity, leaf scorch).
Care Routine
Watering: Drought-tolerant, water when soil dries (every 2-3 days in spring/fall, twice daily in summer mornings/evenings, less in winter). Use room-temperature water; overwatering causes yellowing/root rot.
Fertilizing: Weekly diluted liquid fertilizer in growth season (spring/summer). Phosphorus-potassium every 2 weeks during bloom. Stop in winter.
Pruning: Deadhead after flowers to encourage new buds; light prune in spring for bushiness.
Repotting: Annually in spring to slightly larger pot with fresh medium.
Common Issues & Prevention
Yellow Leaves/Drop: Overwatering or low light. Adjust and increase exposure.
No/Low Blooms: Cold <10°C or excess nitrogen. Maintain warmth, boost P-K fertilizer, ensure sun.
Pests/Diseases: Mites/aphids: Spray diluted soapy water or biopesticides. Root rot from waterlogging: Improve drainage.
Tips: Symbolizing "hope" and "love & freedom," it's great for butterfly gardens or indoors. Flowers appear in 1-2 months; southern outdoors year-round, northern indoors in winter for prolific blooms.
Herbal Series:
☘️ Edible flowers: fresh in boxes, potted plants, scented tea, edible dried flowers
☘️ Herbs series: either dried, boxed fresh, potted
☘️ edible wild vegetables series (human/tortoise/parrot/lizard): boxed fresh, potted plants, re-used pots (再生盆)
Note:
As for the potted plants of ornamental flowers and edible flowers, most of them need the cooperation of temperature, sunlight and fertilizer. Most places in the city are not suitable for planting, unless there are rooftops and village houses with open sun. Not every family is suitable for planting. If you want to increase the survival rate, you can consider violets and orchids as ornamental flowers that are slightly suitable for urban planting.
