The New Zealand Ruby Pearl Pear, marketed as PIQA® Red (formerly PiqaBoo), is a premium interspecific pear variety developed in New Zealand through over 20 years of natural breeding by Prevar in collaboration with the Bioeconomy Science Institute. It combines the best traits of European, Japanese, and Chinese pears, resulting in a striking ruby-red skinned fruit with exceptional crunch, juiciness, and sweetness.
This pear features a distinctive short pyriform (heart-like) shape, deep vibrant red skin with fine brown lenticels, and brilliant white, crisp, juicy flesh that is low in fiber and highly refreshing. It offers a sweet, tropical-honeyed flavor with floral notes, delivering a delightful crunch that can be enjoyed immediately without needing to ripen further. Perfect for fresh eating, salads, or as a healthy snack.
