This is a unique way of drinking coffee found only in Yogyakarta: you add red-hot charcoal to black coffee, causing it to bubble. I was initially worried it might have a strange taste, but it tasted just like normal coffee. You absolutely must try it when you visit Yogyakarta; it's quite unique.

Kopi Joss is Yogyakarta’s legendary, adrenaline-pumping street coffee—the only coffee in the world served by dropping a glowing-hot piece of charcoal straight into your cup with a dramatic “JOSS!” sizzle.
The ritual is pure theater:
A thick, inky-black Robusta coffee (zero sugar, brewed fresh and brutally strong) is poured into a rustic ceramic cup.
The vendor grabs a fist-sized chunk of burning charcoal from the grill with tongs.
Right in front of you, he plunges the red-hot ember into the coffee—BOOM! Instant volcanic eruption of bubbles, steam, and an explosive roasted aroma.
Locals swear the charcoal neutralizes acidity, rounds out the bitterness, and adds a subtle smoky-mineral depth. It does cool the coffee just enough to drink immediately, and the flavor is surprisingly smooth with a clean, charcoal-kissed finish.
At just IDR 5,000–10,000 a glass, Kopi Joss is the star of Yogyakarta’s angkringan (street stalls) after dark—especially the famous row near the main train station. From 8 p.m. onward, students, taxi drivers, and tourists pack the benches, watching the charcoal fireworks and listening to it crackle at the bottom of the cup. It’s not just coffee; it’s a nightly Jogja ritual and one of the wildest caffeine experiences on Earth.
