🛍  Product Information :

Due to widespread cultivation, its origin is thought to be in southwestern Asia, between Lebanon, northern India, and southern and central China, and possibly southeastern Europe, although it is more likely to have been introduced from there. It grows wild but is also a garden shrub grown for its fruit.

The tree tolerates a wide range of temperatures and rainfall, but requires hot summers and plenty of water to produce satisfactory fruit. Unlike most other species in the genus, it tolerates fairly cold winters, surviving temperatures as low as about −15 °C (5 °F); the tree is common in Beijing, for example. This wide tolerance allows the date palm to grow in mountainous or desert environments, as long as groundwater is available throughout the summer. The date palm (Z. jujuba) grows in cooler regions of Asia. More species are widespread in milder to hot desert regions of Asia and Africa.

It resembles a smaller version of the emerald green Indian date, and turns brown-red when ripe. It can be eaten fresh or made into dried fruits or candied fruits. It is nutritious and rich in iron and vitamins.

Its fruit and seeds have various uses in traditional Chinese and Kampo medicine. Some research studies suggest that its traditional use may help relieve stress and promote calmness. In these systems, it is also believed to be useful as an antiseptic/antifungal agent, anti-inflammatory agent, contraceptive, and muscle relaxant. It’s also thought to help regulate blood pressure, stimulate the immune system, prevent ulcers, and aid in wound healing. Date fruit can also be combined with other herbs to treat colds and flu. It is used to protect and heal the kidneys, heart, and spleen. Jujubes are also an ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine, where they can moderate the effects of other herbs to prevent them from being too strong or conflicting.

The dried fruit of the jujube or related plants is called taisou (大棗), and the seeds are called sansōnin (酸棗仁), both of which are herbal medicines (in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia (日本藥典), taisou is identified as the fruit of the jujube, sansōnin as the fruit of the sanebute jujube, and sansōnin as the seed of the sanebute jujube). Among dates, those with large fruits and plenty of flesh are of superior quality, and those with large seeds are called "solid dates". The fruits are harvested in the fall (September-October) when they are yellow-brown in color, steamed and then dried in the sun.

Dates are said to have nourishing and calming properties. It has a sweet taste and is used as a sedative, tonic and diuretic in many traditional Chinese medicine formulas, and is included in herbal remedies such as Kakkonto and Kanmai Dazaoto, which are marketed in Japan. It is combined with ginger and included in many Chinese herbal medicines to mitigate side effects. A traditional folk remedy for treating muscle pain, irritability and sore throat is to take 3-5 grams of jujube in 300-400 cc of water three times a day. However, some people believe that people with weak stomachs or children with epilepsy should not take this drug.

In addition, it is said to have the effect of treating fatigue, loss of appetite, poor blood circulation and insomnia caused by gastrointestinal weakness. Red dates contain oleylamide, which is related to sleep. Flavonoids found in the fruit include kaempferol 3-O-rutinoside, quercetin 3-O-robinobioside, and quercetin 3-O-rutinoside. Terpenoids such as colubrinic acid and alphitolic acid are found in the fruit.

Dates are said to have sedative and hypnotic effects. It tastes sour and astringent, and has complementary and anti-allergic effects. This medicine is included in "Sanzaoren Decoction" 《酸棗仁湯》.

This fruit contains many different healthy ingredients, such as vitamins and amino acids.

cooking

Freshly picked fruit as well as candied dried fruit are often eaten as a snack or with coffee. The Vietnamese eat smoked dates and call them black dates. The pulp can be mashed in water to make a drink. Both China and South Korea produce jujube fruit sweetened tea syrup in glass jars, as well as jujube tea in cans or tea bags. To a lesser extent, the jujube fruit is made into juice and jujube vinegar (known as jujube vinegar or red jujube vinegar in Chinese). They are used to make pickle (কুলের আচার) in West Bengal and Bangladesh. In Assam, it is called "Bogori" and its pickle Bogori aachar (বগৰি আচাৰ) is very famous. In China, wine made from dates is called red date wine.

Sometimes, people would store the jujube fruits in jars filled with white wine, which would keep them fresh for a long time, especially in winter. This type of jujube is called "Zui Zao", which literally means "drunk jujube". The fruit is also an important ingredient in various Chinese delicacies, such as zonggao, a steamed rice cake.

In Vietnam and Taiwan, fully ripe or nearly ripe fruits are picked and sold in local markets and also exported to Southeast Asian countries. In China and Vietnam, people use dried fruits to make desserts such as "Ching Bo Liang," a cold drink containing dried dates, longans, fresh seaweed, barley, and lotus seeds.

In Korea, jujubes are called daeyeon (대추) and are used in jujube tea, medicinal food, and ginseng chicken soup.

When the 19th century British explorer Sir Richard Burton visited Medina, he found that the local date variety was widely eaten. He described its taste as "like a bad plum, an unripe cherry and a bland apple". He named the local names of these three types of dates as "Hindi (Indian), Baladi (local), Tamri (similar to dates)". A hundred years ago a similar variety was common in the Jordan Valley and around Jerusalem. The Bedouins treasured this fruit and called it nabk. It can be dried and stored for the winter, or made into a paste for bread.

In Persian cuisine, the dried drupe is called annab, while in neighboring Armenia it is often eaten as a snack and is called unab. Apparently, confusion over common names is rife. The plant in this genus is the date palm. In contrast, in parts of India, ber is used for three other cultivated or wild species such as Z. spina-christi, Z. mauritiana, and Z. nummularia, which are consumed fresh or dried. [clarification needed] The Arabic name sidr is used to refer to plants of the genus Ziziphus other than Z. jujuba.

In India, the fruit is traditionally dried in the sun, the hard seeds removed, and the dried pulp pounded with tamarind, red chilies, salt, and jaggery. In some parts of Tamil Nadu, India, fresh, whole, ripe fruits are crushed with the above ingredients and then dried to make a cake called ilanthai vadai or regi vadiyalu (Telugu). It is also often eaten as a snack.

In northern and northeastern India, the fruit is eaten fresh with salt and chili flakes, or preserved with oil and spices as sweets, jams, or pickles.

In Madagascar, dates are eaten fresh or dried. People also use it to make jam. A type of date honey is produced in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco.

In Italy there is an alcoholic syrup called brodo di giuggiole.

In Croatia, especially Dalmatia, dates are used to make jams, juices and rakia (fruit brandy).

In Senegal and the Gambia, dates are known as Sii dem or Ceedem and the fruit is eaten as a snack or made into dried date paste as a popular sweet treat for primary school children. These days, it is processed and sold by women in Dakar.

In Australia, people brew date beer.

The commercially available date candy popular in movie theaters was originally date juice, but now other seasonings are used.

Laoling in China is rich in jujube juice and jujube wine.
