Cypermethrin is a broad-spectrum insecticide, meaning it kills not only target pests but also beneficial insects. Fish are particularly sensitive to cypermethrin, but when used according to instructions around residential areas, the risk to aquatic life is minimal. Insects frequently exposed to cypermethrin can quickly develop resistance, rendering it ineffective.

Cypermethrin (CP) is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide widely used in large-scale commercial agricultural production and household consumer products. It has rapid-acting neurotoxicity against insects. Cypermethrin readily degrades in soil and on plants, but its effectiveness can last for weeks after application to inert indoor surfaces. It is a non-systemic, non-volatile insecticide that works through contact and ingestion, used in agricultural and pest control products. Exposure to sunlight, water, and oxygen accelerates its decomposition. According to the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) (formerly the National Pesticide Telecommunications Network), cypermethrin is highly toxic to fish, bees, and aquatic insects.

Many household ant and cockroach insecticides contain cypermethrin, such as Raid, Ortho, Combat, ant chalk, and some Baygon products in Southeast Asia.

Cypermethrin is extremely toxic to cats, and cats cannot tolerate the same therapeutic doses used in dogs. This is related to a deficiency of the UGT1A6 enzyme in cats, which is responsible for metabolizing cypermethrin. Therefore, cypermethrin remains in the cat's body for a much longer time than in dogs or other mammals, and large doses can even be fatal.

Rat pups born to rats exposed to cypermethrin during pregnancy exhibit developmental delays. Male rats exposed to cypermethrin show an increased proportion of abnormal sperm. Cypermethrin also causes genetic damage: mouse exposure to cypermethrin shows an increase in abnormal chromosomes in bone marrow and spleen cells. Cypermethrin is classified as a possible human carcinogen because it increases the incidence of lung tumors in female mice. Cypermethrin has also been associated with an increase in micronuclei in the bone marrow of mice and humans.
