Used for colds, coughs and excessive sputum. This product can induce sweating and relieve exterior symptoms, promote lung function and relieve cough. It is often used together with Notopterygium wilfordii and Saposhnikovia divaricata, such as Qiangsu Dabiao Decoction. If there is asthma and cough, it is often used together with drugs such as Peucedanum scutellariae and Apricot kernel, such as Xingsu Powder; if there is qi stagnation and chest tightness, it is often used with drugs such as Cyperus rotundus and Tangerine peel, such as Xiangsu Powder.
Used for spleen and stomach qi stagnation, chest tightness and vomiting. This product is a good medicine for invigorating the spleen and relieving fullness, promoting qi and stopping vomiting, and also has the function of regulating qi and stabilizing pregnancy. For example, for the treatment of exogenous wind-cold, internal injury of dampness, poor qi movement, chest tightness and vomiting, cold and heat headache, it is often used in combination with patchouli, tangerine peel, and pinellia, such as Huoxiang Zhengqi Powder; if the fetal qi is rising against the flow, chest tightness and vomiting, and fetal movement is restless, amomum villosum, tangerine peel and other qi-regulating and fetal-stabilizing drugs are often used together. It is used to treat plum pit qi syndrome caused by depression of the seven emotions, phlegm stagnation and qi stagnation, and is often used together with Pinellia ternata and Magnolia officinalis.

This product contains volatile oils, mainly perillaldehyde, levorotatory limonene and a small amount of a-pinene. Decoction of perilla leaves has a mild antipyretic effect, promotes the secretion of digestive juices, enhances gastrointestinal motility, reduces bronchial secretions, and relieves bronchial spasms. The water decoction of this product has inhibitory effects on Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae and Staphylococcus.

Perilla has been cultivated in China for about 2,000 years. Li Shizhen of the Ming Dynasty once wrote: "Perilla has leaves when it is young, which can be eaten with vegetables, or pickled with salt and plum brine, which is very fragrant. In summer, it can be made into cooked soup and drunk." This shows that perilla is very common in the Chinese diet. Chinese people use perilla to cook various dishes, often serving them with fish and crabs. The dishes include braised fish with perilla, duck with perilla, fried snails with perilla, Su salt pancakes, fried lamb with perilla and lily, and steamed suckling lamb with perilla in a copper basin.
