Which onion is best for cooking?
Yellow Onions
Yellow Onions: The general cooking onion. Usually relatively cheap and plentiful, they're the go-to onion when cooks get cooking. The flavour is strong but mild, with an onion flavour that isn't overpowering. They often have a bit of sweetness to them, they caramelize nicely and they hold up well when cooked.
What is yellow onion in Australia?
'Onion-Yellow Spanish'
Large, globe-shaped yellow-skinned onion with a mild flavour and crisp, firm white flesh that keeps well. An early maturing variety that grows well in most of Australia if planted early. If the thick, heavy neck dries well it will store for several months in a cool, dry place. Culinary use.
Brown onions have a brown or almost yellow skin and creamy flesh. They have a strong flavour and are excellent for cooking, which is why they are the most widely used onion. With a pungent aroma and strong flavour, it's an excellent all-round onion.
What is the difference between white and brown onions?
White onion: medium to large in shape, with a white papery skin and evenly white flesh. They have a strong flavour and are good for stuffing or baking; only use raw in salads if you want an assertive onion flavour. Yellow/brown onion: a good all-purpose onion, with a light golden skin and yellow flesh.
Can I replace brown onions with red onions?
A red onion can be used anywhere a brown or white onion is used. Red onions are a little sweeter and have a darker color when cooked.
