Why is baby spinach called baby?
Baby Spinach, as the name suggests, are picked when the spinach is in its early stages of growth. At this stage, the leaves are particularly small, tender, and sweet.
Is there a difference between spinach and baby spinach?
In general, the smaller the leaves, the more mild the flavor. Baby spinach are young, smaller leaves that are more tender and sweeter with more tender stems – these are better for salads and using raw while the larger more mature leaves are better suited to quick cooking.
Can I eat raw baby spinach?
Other nutrients found in spinach are more available in its raw form, such as vitamin C, folate, potassium, riboflavin and niacin. Baby spinach leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. It depends upon what dish you want to make, and what nutrients you want from spinach. Eating it both ways is best.
Fresh spinach is packaged in air or nitrogen to extend shelf life. While refrigeration can slow this effect to about eight days, fresh spinach loses most of its folate and carotenoid content during this time. For longer storage, it can be canned, blanched or cooked and frozen.
Some packaged spinach is irradiated to kill any harmful bacteria. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the irradiation of spinach leaves up to 4.0 kg with no or minimal effect on nutritional content.
