Naruto Kintoki (鳴門金時) is a premium brand of Japanese sweet potato (satsuma-imo) originating from Naruto City in Tokushima Prefecture, Shikoku, Japan. Grown in the mineral-rich sandy soils near the Naruto Strait (influenced by the Seto Inland Sea), it features a vibrant reddish-purple skin and deep golden-yellow flesh—hence the name "Kintoki" (meaning "golden time" or referring to its chestnut-like hue). Renowned for its exceptionally sweet, moist, and fluffy chestnut-like texture with minimal fibers, it ranks among Japan's top sweet potato varieties.
Best enjoyed simply baked (yaki-imo) to bring out its natural caramelized sweetness and aroma, or used in dishes like simmered sweet potatoes (kintoki-ni), tempura, pies, cakes, or traditional wagashi. It is highly sought after in winter when sweetness peaks after proper curing/storage. In international markets (including Hong Kong), it's often imported as a luxury sweet potato for snacking or gourmet cooking.
