Comice pears were originally cultivated in France. They're known as the sweetest pear variety, and are often the variety shipped in gift boxes. Because of this, they're sometimes given the nickname “the Christmas pear.” Comice pears have light green skin with a blush of pinkish red.
Comice pears are large, yellow-green, with red blush and some yellowish brown. Its flesh is pale, melting, and very juicy. Because the skin is very delicate and easily bruised, it requires special treatment and is not suitable for mechanical packaging.
Comice pears are widely praised. In 1894 the London Gardening Magazine called it the best pear in the world. Edward Bunyard praised it in his Anatomy of a Dessert (1929), in which he described it as "the perfect combination of flavors, aromas, and textures that man has long dreamed of."
