A LA CARTE

The Cavendish banana is the world's most widely consumed and traded banana variety, belonging to the AAA genome group of dessert bananas (Musa acuminata). It is characterized by medium-sized fruits with thick peels, creamy-sweet flesh, and bright yellow skin with brown flecks when fully ripe. Thanks to its excellent shipping durability, wind resistance, high yield, and uniform appearance, the Cavendish completely replaced the Gros Michel variety—which was nearly wiped out by Panama disease Race 1 in the mid-20th century—and now accounts for over 95% of global banana exports. However, the Cavendish is currently under serious threat from the new Tropical Race 4 (TR4) strain of Panama disease, prompting intensive research worldwide for resistant replacement cultivars.
