How can I be sure the eggs are free range?
Don’t just take our word for it. All of our farms are independently audited to meet AECL (Australian Eggs Limited) ESA (Egg Standards Australia) standards. We also visit all our farms regularly to ensure they meet our high standards, not just the minimum requirements.
Some free range egg customers are unsure of what “free range” means exactly. We can’t speak for all free range farms, but we’re so proud of Sunny Queen Free Range Farm that we developed the ChookTracker so you can see our hens in person. No edits. There are no special effects, just the camera constantly filming the pasture during the day, showing you the hens' day-to-day activities.
Weight Management
Eggs are perfect for a range of weight loss diets, providing a host of vitamins, minerals and protein in just 581kJ per portion (2 x 60g eggs).
As we all know, eggs are rich in high-quality protein. Protein has been shown to help increase feelings of satisfaction after eating – people feel fuller longer! Therefore, this may help people stick to their weight-loss diet longer. Therefore, including eggs as part of a low-fat diet may help reduce food intake over the next 24 hours, thereby aiding weight management.
Studies show that eating breakfast is associated with lower body weight. Eggs should be a healthy breakfast item, with one serving (two eggs) providing about the same number of calories as two slices of toast. In fact, eating eggs for breakfast increases satiety and leads to lower energy intake for the rest of the day compared to a breakfast of cereal or croissants.
However, muscle loss is common when following a weight loss diet. This can be minimized by adding more protein-rich foods, such as eggs, as part of your diet plan. Finally, when eggs are consumed as part of a low-kilojoule or low-carb diet, they do not increase blood cholesterol levels and, in fact, have been shown to improve HDL levels.
Antioxidants
Consuming eggs can lead to increased levels of antioxidants in the body. Eggs contain the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin. Increasing your intake of these antioxidants has been linked to better eye health and may protect against age-related eye diseases.
Eating about one egg a day can lead to increased antioxidant concentrations in the macular area of the eye. Studies show that consuming high amounts of antioxidants from eggs may reduce the risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Additionally, the bioavailability of lutein and zeaxanthin in eggs is higher than that of other plant sources.
Eggs also contain the amino acids tyrosine and tryptophan, which have antioxidant properties.

What are caged eggs?
Caged eggs are produced by hens that are kept in specially designed cages. There are four to six hens in each cage, with fresh feed and water at the tips of their feathers. The chicken coop is located in a secure, climate-controlled barn so it is protected from other animals and weather extremes. This is the most intensive form of egg production and therefore the most cost-effective, which means caged eggs are generally the most affordable.
Our caged egg production facilities are independently audited to comply with the Model Code of Animal Welfare - Poultry 4th Edition.
What are cage-free eggs?
Our free range hens are housed in a large enclosed barn to protect them from other animals. The barn is well ventilated and has plenty of natural light, making it safe and comfortable. Fresh food and water are readily available. The hens are free to roam the large barn, flapping their wings on their perches, taking dust baths and socializing.
Our cage-free farms are independently audited to ensure they comply with animal welfare regulations as well as our own strict cage-free standards.
What are free range eggs?
Our free range hens have access to an outdoor area during the day to enjoy the fresh country air and are free to roam and do all the things chickens naturally do. All of our free range hens have easy access to fresh feed and water. At night our hens retreat to the barn, protected from other animals and the elements, for a good night’s sleep. Our free range farms are independently audited and certified by ESA (Egg Standards Australia). Visit our ChookTracker and watch our hens roaming around in real-time, unedited.
What is organic eggs?
Our organic free range farms meet very strict regulations, including providing evidence that no pesticides have been used on the farm for seven years. Additionally, we feed our hens only organic feed.
Organic free range hens have access to an outdoor area during the day where they can roam freely. We keep the hens in the barn at night to protect them from other animals and the elements.
Our organic free range eggs are independently audited and certified by Australia's largest independent organic certification body, ACO (Australian Certified Organic).
How long can eggs be kept?
Fresh eggs can be refrigerated in the carton for up to six weeks from the date they were packed. Remember to put them away as soon as possible. Eggs age seven times faster when left on the bench than when properly stored in the refrigerator.
How to tell if eggs are fresh?
A quick test for freshness is to check if a raw egg in its shell sinks in a basin of water. Fresh eggs stay at the bottom of the bowl, while older eggs float due to large air bubbles that form at the bottom.
Storage method:
What is the best way to store eggs?
The easiest way to keep eggs fresh is to store them in their original carton, pointed end down, in the refrigerator as soon as possible after purchase. The carton reduces moisture loss and prevents flavors from other foods from being absorbed by the eggs. It is not recommended to store eggs loose or in a specially designed area on the refrigerator door as they are more likely to become damaged.
🔅 Notes:
Can Eggs Contain Salmonella? If so, how can I avoid it?
Salmonella can be found on the outside of eggs and inside the eggshell. While eggs are safe if handled properly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers the following food safety recommendations:
Shell eggs are safest when stored in cartons in the refrigerator, rather than in individual egg racks. Unrefrigerated eggs can age longer in a day than refrigerated eggs can in a week!
Eggs should be cooked thoroughly - both the white and yolk should be firm. Avoid eating undercooked eggs, especially if you are considered to be in an “at-risk” condition (i.e. pregnant, an infant/child, or elderly).
Eat eggs as soon as possible after they are cooked. Do not keep warm or at room temperature for more than two hours.
Cracked or dirty eggs should be discarded.
Eggs and Allergies
Egg allergy is one of the most common allergies in children, affecting up to 9%. However, the good news is that approximately 85% of children will outgrow their egg allergy.
Parents with egg allergies should take special care to avoid egg around their infants to minimize sensitivity via the inhalation route. Healthy babies with no family history of egg allergy can eat egg yolks from 6-8 months old.
People who are allergic to eggs should avoid all types of eggs, including duck, goose, and quail eggs. People with health problems should seek dietary advice from their doctor or dietitian.
